Dear Shaving Seconds:

Bravo on getting out there! While we can’t promise a personal record, we can help fuel your journey.

Whether you’re a professional or weekend warrior, what you eat makes a difference to your athletic performance, says Christi Bowling, a Vori Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). “An athlete’s dietary requirements depend on several aspects, including the sport, goals, environment, and practical issues,” says Bowling.

“For example, if you are training for a marathon, it’s important to know how and when to store up needed carbohydrates for energy,” says Bowling. “If you are resistance training, then getting the proper amount of protein, especially after a workout, is crucial to optimize muscle growth and development.  If muscle cramping or getting fatigued easily during training is a common occurrence, it may be that your body is lacking in electrolytes such as potassium, magnesium or sodium.”

The bottom (and finish) line is: Nutrition for athletic performance is highly personal.  A customized plan that inlcudes the right macronutrients and supplements for your sport will likely help improve your game the most. Talk with a Vori Health nutritionist to get your personalized plan in play.

Truly yours,
